3 Ways to Change or Update your Aadhaar address

According to the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), an individual can change the address through any one of the 44 listed documents.

Passport, bank passbook, bank statement, voter id card, post office passbook, electricity bill (not older than 3 months), water bill (not older than 3 months), gas connection bill (not over 3 months), vehicle registration certificate, marriage certificate and school leaving certificate are some documents that can be used to change the Aadhaar address. You should make sure that the name on the document should match your name on the Aadhaar card.

However, if you don’t have any document, you can update your Aadhaar through address validation letter.

Update your Aadhaar address online

To change your Aadhaar address online, your mobile phone number needs to be registered with Aadhaar as a onetime password (OTP) will be sent to the registered number to carry forward the process.

Step 1: First, you need is to go to the self-service portal of UIDAI. Go to Update Aadhaar and later tap on ‘Update your address online’.

Step 2: Now you have to follow the ways to proceed. If you have valid address proof, click on update address or else ‘Request for Address Validation Letter’.

Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar details and add the OTP.

Step 4: Enter the new address details.

Step 5: Proceed with the steps. Upload a scanned document of the address.

You will receive an Acknowledgement Slip. The Acknowledgement Slip will contain the Update Request number (URN). You can then download the updated version and get your Aadhaar card print out.

Change your Aadhaar address through address validation letter

In case the required documents are not in your name, you can also use the address validation letter. Family members, relatives, friend or landlord can use their address to verify the address through the address validation letter.

Step 1: After you tap on ‘Request for Address Validation Letter’, enter your Aadhaar number and enter the OTP that you have received on your registered phone number.

Step 2: Now enter your verifier’s Aadhaar number. After submitting the number, UIDAI will send a message to the verifier’s phone number.

Step 3: The verifier will receive OTP and the link to verify the request. After logging in, the verifier has to put the OTP to verify the application.

Step 4: Once the verifier approves, you will receive an SMS with the Service Request Number (SRN) and the link to submit the application on your registered mobile number.

Step 5: Enter the SRN and OTP received through SMS. Click on “Submit Update Request” to complete the address update process.

Step 6: You will receive the letter and secret code through post. Log on the Online Address Update Portal and go to update address via Secret Code.

Step 8: Review new address and submit the final request.

Keep the URN for future reference to check status.

Change your Aadhaar address offline by booking an appointment

Recently, UIDAI has come with online booking of appointment at any Aadhaar Seva Kendras. Currently, there are 44 UIDAI-run Aadhaar Seva Kendras across the country. UIDAI is planning to open more centres.

You can book the appointment through the UIDAI website. This process saves you from the hassle of standing in a queue to update your Aadhaar. You have to visit the Seva Kendras with the documents for the verification process.
