Do you drive a car and pay toll at different toll gates? From December 15, having a FASTag will become mandatory for all vehicles both private and commercial. Fail to do so and you run the risk of paying double the amount of normal toll.
FASTag is National Highways Authority of India(NHAI)’s program for Electronic Toll Collection on toll plazas.
FASTags are prepaid rechargeable tags that allow automatic deduction of toll. This allows hassle-free movement through the toll gates through cashless payments. It is valid throughout the country. They are normally affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle. FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology through the required toll is automatically debited from the account.
After you purchase, you can recharge and top up according to your requirement.
FASTag has a one-time fee of Rs. 200. The refundable security deposit depends on the vehicle type.
With FASTag, you don’t have to look for change the next time you pass through a troll. The toll will be automatically debited.
Compulsory use of FASTags will reduce the halt of traffic near the toll gates manifold as it will lead to non-stop movement of traffic. This will also save petrol as well.
Users get SMS alerts for toll deductions, low balances etc. Customers can keep track of their balance and keep the required balance.
As the FASTag is a prepaid account, it needs to be recharged depending on your usage. Customers can recharge their account through net banking and mobile banking.
Users can get a monthly cashback of 2.5% on toll transactions till March 31, 2020.
It comes with other benefits such as reduced air pollution, reduced use of paper, fewer management efforts at the toll plaza.
Twenty three certified organisations such as payment banks, small finance banks and co-operative banks issue FASTag. Although you can apply from any bank, it is bank neutral. This means that one can recharge from any bank.
One can also get FASTag from select toll plazas, RTOs, petrol pumps, and from online platforms such as Amazon.
Step 1: Visit the official website of the banks from where you want to apply FASTags like SBI, Kotak Mahindra Bank etc.
Step 2: Search and click on the ‘Get FASTag’ or ‘Apply for FASTag’ that will be shown on the homepage of the bank’s website or mobile banking app.
Step 3: You need to enter your mobile number where OTP will be sent. Enter the OTP and click on ‘Submit’.
Step 4: Enter your details such as name, email id, address etc, vehicle details such as the type of vehicle, registration number and upload the softcopy of supporting documents.
Step 5: Check all the details that you have filled in the application form before you submit. Submit the application form.
Step 6: Pay the necessary fees. .
Once the process is over, save the copy and payment receipt. You can also take a print out of it to keep as a reference.
